Sega Genesis’s Six-Button Controllers

Releasing new controllers for the same system with added features and functions is nothing new these days. Back in the day, however, it didn’t make much sense to take a popular controller design and, say, double the number of effective buttons it used (much less design games that only took advantage of this control scheme). Sega did just that though. After the Genesis’s classic three-button controller, Sega eventually released a six-button version. Unfortunately, it wasn’t compatible with every game, even with the option to make it act like the standard three-button controller, making it an awkward accessory.
