Sega CD
It’s not like Sega didn’t try introducing a CD-ROM system before the Saturn. The problem is that it tried doing so with the Sega CD in 1991, making it an add-on for the Genesis. While games like Sonic CD would stand out, benefiting from the increased storage capacity on media to deliver outstanding music among other things, most other titles were fairly underwhelming. There were many full motion video or FMV games like Night Trap, the latter facing tons of controversy over its depiction of violence. Though the Sega CD sold well enough, it was followed by the miserable 32X and eventually discontinued for the Saturn’s sake.
