Sega Saturn’s Launch
The US marketing campaign behind the Sega Saturn stands as one of the worst of all-time for consoles. The Saturn was already losing out against the PlayStation One in Japan. So Sega decided to pull a fast one on Sony at E3 1995 – it announced that the Saturn would cost $399. Also, it launched it then and there, a good four months earlier than the intended date. Hilariously, Sega failed to inform retailers, which left them scrambling for supplies. It also didn’t help that Sony would subsequently announce at the very same show that the PlayStation One would cost only $299 in the US.
