Rejecting Sony
Sony’s PS One price announcement at E3 1995 probably brought some sweet vindication for the company. This is because at one point, Sony was looking to team with Sega to produce a CD-based console system. After negotiations fell through with Nintendo, Sony approached Sega of America and convinced then-CEO Tom Kalinske to work collaboratively on a console. Kalinske met with Sony’s Ken Kutaragi and all seemed to be going well. Unfortunately, there was a problem – the board of directors and Sega’s president said no, calling it “a stupid idea” and lambasting Sony for not knowing how to make hardware or software. The deal fell through, Sony went on to develop the PlayStation One and the rest is history.
