As the years go by, video games continue to grow in size and scope. From Ancient Greece to the American Frontier, from the frigid wastes of Venus to the irradiated remains of Appalachia, from the countrysides of Montana to the urban jungle of Manhattan, we’ve visited some excellent worlds in games in 2018. Large and detailed, dense and packed, we’ve seen settings of every variety in games this year, as the medium continues to push forward with new and better ways to immerse players. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at what have been fifteen of the biggest, most packed, and most interesting video game worlds this year.
ASSASSIN’S CREED ODYSSEY
The size of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s Ancient Greece is staggering, but what is even more staggering is how much variety there is. Around every corner there’s something interesting to see, and the game always keeps things fresh with incredible variety in both, art style and visual design, while the series’ iconic methods of traversal make the entire world feel literally boundless. Whether you’re riding your horse across vast, rolling plains, or clambering across the rooftops of Athens, or sailing through a furious storm out on the Aegean Sea, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s world never ceases to amaze you.
