MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN
Few games ever have done traversal as well as Spider-Man does. The open world of Manhattan in and of itself is nothing too special on paper, but it’s the game’s core, fundamental pillar of web-swinging that makes it one of the best environments we’ve ever seen in a video game. The sheer and simple act of getting from point A to point B is a blissful experience, so blissful, in fact, that it’s entirely possible for you to find yourself wanting to do nothing else at all. Manhattan may not be too large, and it might not offer the most unique side content, but Spider-Man’s traversal mechanics make it a joy to simply exist in its world. If an open world game has a fast travel system that is used as little as Spider-Man’s is and feels as pointless as it does here, you know the game’s done something right.
