A lesson that would serve us very well in real life as well. This belief is something that Big Boss shares with Solid Snake- that though people might raise certain others up as heroes, as legends, and caricaturize their best tendencies so much that they don’t even seem like actual people anymore, the truth is rarely every that pretty. Having had more than enough experience in that area, Big Boss (or Naked Snake, as he was still known at that time) understands that the people viewed as heroes have done their fair share of ugly things to get to that status as well.
