The moment protagonist James Sunderland enters the misty confines of the eponymous town of Silent Hill, you can feel the weight of pure dread instantly settling in. It’s not just that Silent Hill 2 takes no time in getting you face-to-face with some truly horrifying monstrosities- more importantly, it also shows right off the bat just how incredibly effective it is at building up its foreboding atmosphere, so that the every moving shadow, every shape in the fog, every faint rustling sound makes you jump in your skin.
