The first Psychonauts released in 2005 and is still considered a flop to this day. Perhaps it’s failure to sell well explains the 16-year gap between that and its sequel. Indeed, developer Double Fine have stated officially that financial demand burdened Psychonauts 2’s development, but after a 2011 re-release saw the light of day financial pressure lifted, the sequel was finally greenlit. Psychonauts 2 was announced in 2015, but more funding would be required to see it through. Despite publishers going bankrupt along the way, the sequel eventually completed. Ups-and-downs during development can spell a lacklustre finished product, but despite the lack of promise the result was a triumph.
