SEGA RUSHES THE SATURN OUT OF THE GATE
We all love shadow drops, don’t we? But this was perhaps the biggest shadow drop of them all. Sega, scurrying to compete with the PlayStation – which was constantly gathering steam ahead of its own launch – spend their 1995 conference talking about the system. But they didn’t just talk about it. They confirmed the price, and also announced that the console was available to purchase now. Audiences were surprised, but as it turned out, so were retailers- Sega had rushed the launch of the Saturn to get a headstart on the PS1 so much, they had failed to even inform a large number of retailers that they’d be shadow dropping the console.
