We just spoke of Sega’s E3 moment of rushed insanity, and how it was largely in response to the growing threat of the PlayStation. Well, the PlayStation itself had an excellent E3 in 1995, one that helped it establish a gaming dynasty that is going strong to this day. It was an impressive showing all around, but what was even more impressive was the console’s pricing, how cheap it was in comparison to the Saturn’s $399, and most importantly, the way it was announced. With a Sony exec wanting to the podium, and saying uttering just one small message before walking away again- “299”.
