Many in attendance at the PlayStation 4 reveal were a bit flummoxed when Capcom took the stage. Although Deep Down was met with praise, the question still remained: Why not Street Fighter or Resident Evil?

Speaking to MCV, producer Yoshinori Ono has a simple answer. “We wanted to be free to utilise the PS4’s hardware capabilities and unique services without the constraints of working within an existing IP.

“Of course, the development experience we gain will put us in an even better position to bring our existing series to the console in a way that takes full advantage of its hardware and services.”

Calling the console “developer focused”, which “makes it easy to make games, and the online services are easy to integrate”, Ono also stated that “The real-time capabilities of the hardware allowed us to produce the Deep Down demonstration you saw at the conference in a relatively short amount of time.”

So while Capcom finds its legs and gets comfortable with the hardware, you can bet we’ll be seeing the more established franchise somewhere in the future.
