Capcom Producer Explains Resident Evil 7 Naming Quirk

Biohaz--whoops.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard

Capcom’s third-person horror/action/”many irrelevant things” (hello Resident Evil 6), has always been given different titles in Japan and internationally; Biohazard in Japan and, well, Resident Evil elsewhere. But with Resident Evil 7 (which, by the way, isn’t even third-person), we’ll just be having the single name in Japan and elsewhere.

Resident Evil 7’s producer Masachika Kawata took to Capcom-Unity to explain why: “Obviously you can tell we wanted to merge the two titles we’ve had,” he said.

“As fans may know, the game has been called Biohazard ever since the beginning in Japan, and it’s been called Resident Evil in the West. We really want to have the big, impactful feeling of the series being in one place right now, and having one future it’s heading towards. To do that, we brought the two titles together into one with Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. It’s the opposite in Japan, it’s BioHazard 7 Resident Evil.”

Well, that doesn’t make much sense to us, either. But in any case, Resident Evil 7 (and only Resident Evil 7), is set to drop on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24th, 2017. The whole experiences is playable on PSVR, by the way, which is fantastic.
