Todd Howard On Future Games Like The Elder Scrolls 6 And Fallout 5: “I Would Be Sad If We Stopped”

The richness of both these universes probably ensures that Howard won't ever get bored of mining them further.

The Elder Scrolls Online

Has anyone ever truly worried that Bethesda may one day stop making The Elder Scrolls or Fallout games, or that they may end up handing them off to someone else? While the latter is eventually inevitable (director Todd Howard, who is responsible for both of these franchises, won’t be making games forever, after all), the former seems highly unlikely, given just how successful the two franchises have been for Bethesda.

And speaking to Glixel, Todd Howard revealed that he doesn’t intend to stop making either Elder Scrolls and Fallout games for a very long time, now- that he would, in fact, be perfectly happy simply alternating between those two franchises for the rest of his gaming career.

“In some respects, yes,” he said. “They’re worlds that we really love. I would be sad if we stopped. We want to do other things as well, but those are worlds that are part of who I am. We make little games, too, like Fallout Shelter. We have some other mobile games that we’re starting to look at. We can try some things that we usually wouldn’t do with the larger games.”

Which, I’m totally fine with- I just hope he doesn’t find himself getting creatively burnt out! Howard has been working on The Elder Scrolls for at least 20 years at this point, though, so if he hasn’t gotten bored of it now, it’s unlikely that he ever will.
