While many of us have talked about the success of the PS4, the…presence of the Xbox One and the surprising reception to the Nintendo Switch over the past year, we’re also looking to the future. The PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X represent stop-gaps, premium options for 4K owners and slight upgrades in terms of processing power. But what about the next generation of consoles?
To understand when the PlayStation 5 and next Xbox would launch, GamingBolt spoke to Lewis Ward, IDC research director for gaming and VR/AR. When asked when Sony would ideally launch the PS5, Ward said, “Right now I think PS5 and the next-gen Xbox will arrive in 2021, but that’s really just a tentative placeholder in my forecast.”
As for which console has a chance to hit the 100 million sales milestone, Ward’s choice was fairly obvious. “I think the PS4 will probably get there in 2019.” Considering the PS4 has sold more than 70 million units worldwide as of early December, it’s certainly not unreasonable to see it hit 100 million units in 2019 (and maybe even sooner). Regardless, we can’t wait to see what the next generation of gaming holds for fans and developers alike.
