God of War Franchise Could Head to Egyptian, Mayan Eras Next

SIE Santa Monica also believes that God of War has to be even bigger than before.

SIE Santa Monica’s God of War will be coming in early 2018 for PlayStation 4 and marks the first true sequel in the franchise since God of War 3 in 2010. It also takes Kratos to the Norse era, makes him older and features his son along for the adventure.

Interestingly enough, even without the explanation as to how Kratos wound up in this era, it wouldn’t be odd to see him in Egypt or the Mayan era. Director Cory Balrog spoke to Game Informer for the publication’s February cover story and shared his thoughts on this.

“The Greek games were the Greek era of God of War. Moving on, the next mythological belief system he interacts with became the Norse era of God of War. But we may end up going on to the Egyptian era and the Mayan era and so on and so forth.”

Though God of War is the first true sequel in a while, it’s not the most recent God of War game to have released. That would be God of War Ascension from 2013. Given how underwhelming it was, SIE Santa Monica head Shannon Studstill said there was talk at Sony about whether the franchise needed more time off.

“A lot of people throughout the organization wanted [God of War] to sleep and rest. Even the first pitches I gave, there was that, ‘You’ve really got to convince me that we should do another one.'” Balrog further noted that the franchise had to be bigger than before, likely to the level of Uncharted or Assassin’s Creed.

“To me, that was important, because I really think we needed to have a much bigger audience. I want this to reach a lot of people; I want this to be on the level of the Uncharteds and the Assassin’s Creeds. We want to grow this franchise big time,” said Balrog.

God of War doesn’t have a release date but expect more information on that in the coming months.
