Alan Wake 2 Was In Development Years Ago, But It Didn’t Pan Out – Remedy

Alan Wake stands as one of Remedy Entertainment’s most fiercely beloved games to this day, which is saying a lot, when you look at all the games they’ve worked on over the years. Sure enough, there has been a great deal of demand for a sequel, and Remedy themselves have also talked about wanting to make one on more than one occasion.

Recently, while speaking with VG247, Remedy Entertainment’s director of communications, Thomas Puha, spoke about the matter of an Alan Wake sequel once again, talking about how an Alan Wake 2 had been in development several years ago, but that it ultimately just didn’t pan out. Puha also went on to clarify that the Alan Wake IP is owned by Remedy Entertainment themselves, and the only thing stopping them from making a sequel is “time, money, and resources.”

“We were working on Alan Wake 2 years ago and it just didn’t pan out, so there’s nothing,” said Puha. “We’re just booked solid for the next couple of years, really. We do own the Alan Wake IP, but it’s never quite as simple as that, but yeah, we do own it.”

Right now, Remedy is working on the surreal action adventure title Control, which is yet another IP that they are hoping they will be able to foster in the future, the way they had tried to do with Alan Wake as well.

“A lot of the things that Remedy has done in the last five years is really about putting the company into a position where we have more control,” said Puha. “I mean, the name [of the game] really comes almost from that, and it’s giving us, as a company, the opportunity to decide what happens when the game is out. So, of course, we’re always trying to build a franchise.”

“We spent all that time creating the world and everything, and when you only do it for one game, it’s just a lot of work,” he continued. “We’ve got nothing against sequels, so definitely Control is something that we want to be working on in the future. But of course, the first game has to be as good as it can to even build that platform that we can make more, so that’s what we’re focused on.”

Here’s hoping Remedy is able to find the required time, money, and resources to make Alan Wake 2 sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Control launches for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC (where it will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for a year) on August 27.
