It’s been known for a while that Square Enix would release Final Fantasy 7 Remake on an episodic basis. The full extent of that can be seen with the announcement that Game 1, out in March 2020, will be set entirely in Midgar. Given that Midgar was a fairly small part of the original game, it’s pretty crazy to see this much attention given to it.

However, the development team seems unsure how many total “games” Final Fantasy 7 Remake will end up encompassing. Speaking to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, producer Yoshinori Kitase said, “We can’t reveal that many details about this.

“Before we actually started working on this, we knew it was going to be a large amount of content. When we started out planning the plot for the first game, it hit us again… at that point we decided we were going to focus first game on Midgar and what happens in Midgar. Unfortunately we can’t say anything more about the future games, because we don’t know ourselves.”

To be fair, the first game is meant to be as large as your regular Final Fantasy title which is no small feat. Currently, the developer is finishing up Game 1 while planning for Game 2. However, the idea that Final Fantasy 7 Remake could go on for several years before it’s finally finished is definitely a wild one.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake launches on March 3rd 2020 for PS4. Square Enix revealed tons of new information and footage on the game’s combat, which offers real-time and tactical options along with character switching. We also learned about the different special editions like the Deluxe Edition and 1st Class Edition, the latter featuring a Play Arts Kai Cloud Strife and Hard Daytona figure.
