Marvel’s Avengers got a full blown reveal at Square Enix’s E3 press event this week, but there’s still some confusion about a number of things to do with the game- we know that it promises both, single player and co-op experiences, but how does that work? Are there some activities that are only playable co-operatively?

In a Q&A session with the developers posted on the official page of Marvel’s Avengers (transcription over at ResetEra), it was confirmed that “just about everything” in the game can be tackled solo if you wish to do so.

‘You can play just about everything by yourself if you want to,” the developers said. “I encourage you to play with your buddies. It’s so much more fun in multiplayer. But yeah, most of this stuff you can play by yourself.”

The developers also confirmed that the campaign and the game’s co-op multiplayer content are being kept separate. So while the campaign will be a story-driven cinematic experience that you tackle by yourself, in between missions, you’ll be able to go back to your base, where you’ll be picking up missions that are designed for co-op play and aren’t part of the main campaign story.

“We have a really robust campaign that you can play through,” the devs said. “You’re going to play in different levels as different superheroes to further the narrative. We’re going to have a base of operations that you’re going to be able to go off and play multiplayer levels or come back to the campaign.

“There’s a huge world to explore. From that base of operation you go through many different places. We’re excited to show you all the cool places you can go to. It was way too big to complain in one space, it’s multiple different areas and takes the Avengers all over the place.”

The developers also confirmed that though they’ll be releasing new free content to the game after launch similar to a GaaS model, it’s still a story-driven title.

“It’s absolutely a story driven game and it’s going to keep evolving even after launch,” the said. “A cool thing about this game is you’re going to see new heroes being released, you’re going to see new regions at no additional fee.”

Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia- and no, it won’t be open world. Get more details on how its co-op play will function through here (spoilers: there can’t be four Iron Men flying around at the same time).
