"It’s not just one area that these Avengers protect," says Noah Hughes, creative director of Crystal Dynamics. "It’s an entire world."

Unlike most big budget AAA releases these days, Square Enix’s upcoming Avengers is not going to be an open world title. Developers Crystal Dynamics have explained that by saying that the Avengers are a global force, not just restricted to any one place, and will be travelling to many locations throughout the game. In light of that, an open world setting for the game would not have worked.

But just how diverse is the game’s lineup of locations going to be? Noah Hughes, creative director of Crystal Dynamics, was asked the question about the same in an interview with GamesBeat. Before explaining the location of San Francisco that we saw from the game at E3 2019, he then went on to speak about how the game is going to have “a great diversity of locations.”

“We have a bit of a destroyed San Francisco,” said Hughes. “The game opens at the A-Day event. The Avengers are opening a west coast headquarters and showing off a new Helicarrier with some new technology. Things go terribly wrong, and that leads to the Avengers disbanding. We pick up the story five years later, and that journey will take them to many places.”

“You can glimpse a few of them in the demo here,” he continued. “We see Tony in space for a moment. We see a snowy environment with Thor flying through it. We have a great diversity of locations, that sense that it’s not just one area that these Avengers protect. It’s an entire world.”

Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. As per the developers, it’s very much going to be a story-driven title, while almost everything in the game will also be playable solo. If you’re looking for a co-op experience though, you can get details on that through here.
