In a shocking development, Sony has announced the acquisition of Insomniac Games. Known for Ratchet and Clank, Sunset Overdrive and more recently the smash hit Spider-Man, Insomniac has been relatively independent till now. With this acquisition, it joins Sony’s Worldwide Studios line-up of first party developers.

From Sony’s perspective, it makes sense to acquire Insomniac. The studio has been developing exclusive titles for Sony’s consoles for years. Spider-Man on PS4 being a massive success would also contribute to Sony wanting such an asset under its purview (as opposed to possibly being snapped up by other companies). Of course, this is also likely part of Sony’s initiative to prepare for the next generation of games with PlayStation 5.

Either way you cut it, this is a huge deal for Insomniac Games. What will become of Sunset Overdrive which released for Xbox One and more recently PC? Will Insomniac possibly expand to accommodate more projects? Perhaps a return to Ratchet and Clank is on the cards at some point? Time will tell but we’ll keep an eye out for the future.
