A new generation of consoles always brings new technologies. For this generation, it seems the next big thing to talk about is the upcoming SSDs that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 will have. But it seems like a lot are especially impressed with the SSD in Sony’s next machine. The CEO of Epic Games, for instance, said it was better than current high-end PCs even. It seems Sony is banking on this feature, and it’s going to be quite a step up.
As part of their most recent corporate strategy document, the PS5’s processing speed is talked about. They are looking at it as an evolution of what we have now, writing that this generational jump won’t be just about resolution bumps, but the speed in which games will be read, meaning the reduction or elimination of loading times, as well as more seamless navigation through large games.
“In order to further enhance the sense of immersion in games, we expect to improve not just the resolution, but the speed of games. For example, through a custom‐designed high‐speed SSD, we plan to realize game data processing speeds that are approximately 100 times faster than PS4. Game load times should be much shorter, and players should be able to move through immense game worlds in almost an instant.”
It all sounds quite exciting on paper, though it probably isn’t going to mean anything until we get the hardware in front of us and see it in action. The system is still expected to launch this holiday season.
