Arkane’s Deathloop is launching soon, and the game’s fascinating central premise combined with the pedigree of the developer behind it means that a lot of people are looking forward to getting their hands on the game. Of course, content is king, and while quality reigns supreme, quantity is also crucial. Deathloop, being a mostly single player-focused experience, is going to have to rely on replayability- for which games often rely on things such as a New Game Plus option.

According to game director Dinga Bakaba, however, Deathloop won’t have a New Game Plus mode. Speaking in an interview with game Informer (which you can view in its entirety below), Bakaba said that Deathloop encourages replayability in its core design, and that, combined with wanting to avoid repetition and mundanity, meant that the developer decided not to have a New Game Plus option in the game.

“No,” Bakaba said when asked if the game has a New Game Plus mode. “The reason is that we wanted the replayability to be built into the structure of the game. To an extent, you will be replaying those areas a lot, you can unlock everything, [but] you cannot take everything with you at the same time. But it felt like making the campaign again while keeping your stuff, [players might feel] ‘well, that’s exactly what I was doing just before I finished the game.”

Bakaba added that Arkane could maybe experiment with that down the line, but they would have to go about it in a different way, owing to the game’s core design. He said: “Maybe it’s something we can experiment with, but we’ll have to be a bit more wild and maybe even a bit less diegetic than a New Game Plus, because of the nature of the game.”

Deathloop is out on May 21 for PS5 and PC. Bakaba has previously also spoken about the game’s campaign, and though he hasn’t said exactly how long it will be, he has promised it’s going to be a “chunky” experience. Read more on that through here.
