Starfield’s Protagonist isn’t Voiced, Dialogue is First Person

Bethesda is walking back on the changes it introduced in Fallout 4, which featured a voiced protagonist and third person dialogue scenes.

Starfield isn’t going to be out when many had hoped it would be, but though the wait for it is going to be much longer, we at least have a lot more details on the game to make that wait a little easier. At the recent Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, we were treated to a meaty gameplay demonstration for the sci-fi open world RPG, and now, we have another new bit of information.

Taking recently to Twitter, developer Bethesda Game Studios confirmed something that many had already figured out based on Starfield’s gameplay debut- that its protagonist will not be voiced, and that its dialogue sequences are going to be first person.

That, of course, is the way Bethesda has typically done things in its RPGs, though it is a departure from the changes introduced in Fallout 4. The 2015 RPG was the first game made by Bethesda Game Studios to feature a fully voiced protagonist, while dialogue sequences were also third person- though as many will tell you, those things were symptomatic of some of Fallout 4’s bigger issues, so it’s probably for the best that Starfield is going back to what the developer is good at.

Starfield is due out in the first half of 2023, with Bethesda supposedly putting the finishing touches on the game. A recent Xbox Game Pass sign up page set the game’s launch for early 2023, though that hasn’t yet been officially communicated by Microsoft or Bethesda.
