Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

There are spoilers ahead for Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

What role Zack Fair will play in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been a hot topic of conversation among fans for quite some time. We have, of course, known for a while that he will have an important role to play in the upcoming sequel, but with Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s ending suggesting that he has perhaps avoided the death that he suffered in the original game’s story, there’s naturally no shortage of theories about how the remake trilogy is deviating from the original plotline.

And though much about the character’s involvement still obviously remains a mystery, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s director Naoki Hamaguchi has once again spoken about just how big of a role he will play in the sequel’s story. Speaking recently to Game Informer, Hamaguchi reiterated the character’s importance, adding that his unexpectedly role in Rebirth will also help players “deepen their understanding of the Final Fantasy 7 world.” According to Hamaguchi, Zack and the Whispers – who will also be returning – are “equally immensely important” to the remake trilogy’s story.

“Through him, players will be able to experience and understand more of the Final Fantasy 7 worldview and it will deepen their understanding of the Final Fantasy 7 world,” he said. “We have used the character Zack to depict the combined view of [story and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, creative director Tetsuya Nomura, and producer Yoshinori Kitase] – the original creators – intents of how this world of Final Fantasy 7 came to be and its policies and rules governing this world. This is going to be depicted through the character of Zack. As much as the Whispers within the story, Zack is an equally, immensely important, crucial, key character to this story that I believe fans will enjoy within Rebirth.”

Speaking of how the remake trilogy’s story is continuing to diverge from the original game, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s developers have also recently spoken about how the game will attempt to surprise even long-time fans with a key scene.

The developers have recently also spoken about Sephiroth’s expanded role in Rebirth, and what the game’s vast world map will bring to the table with its side content.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches for PS5 on February 29.
