Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth breaks from the original game and Remake by far with its open world-style areas. They’re massive to traverse, and while fast travel is available, it needs to be unlocked for each region. Here’s how to do so and travel between areas quickly.
How to Unlock Fast Travel
Initially, you can fast-travel to certain landmarks and caches. If you meet and follow baby Chocobos, they’ll lead you to Chocobo Stops that must be repaired. The process involves lifting the signpost and once done, you receive a Golden Plume and unlock it as a fast travel location.
However, this only allows for fast traveling within the region. Going from the Grasslands to Junon and further on means you can’t fast-travel back to the former until you complete certain side quests. Keep an eye out on side quests to unlock the Chocobo Carriage to fast travel between regions – eventually, other methods will open up.
It’s also worth noting that completing World Intel projects for Chadley will see it become a fast travel point in the future, but you must first unlock the region’s Chocobo (more on that below). Finally, you can fast-travel within some points in larger cities like Costa del Sol, but that requires completing a side quest.
How to Unlock Each Region’s Chocobo
There are six different Chocobos, one per region, which you’ll encounter as part of the Chocobo Wrangling quest chain. Check your map for the track icon to find and capture each one.
Catching a Chocobo in one region doesn’t affect the others. Each Chocobo can use Scent and Scour to locate buried items while possessing unique abilities for traversal. Here’s where to find each region’s Chocobo and how to capture them.
Type | Location | How to Catch | Ability |
---|---|---|---|
Yellow Chocobo (Piko) | Grasslands | Must capture Piko for Bill. Sneak through tall grass and use stones to distract the other Chocobo. | N/A |
Grey Chocobo (Belle) | Junon | You need to activate the minecarts in the area and sneak behind them as they move closer to the Grey Chocobo. Be careful not to get spotted by the Yellow Chocobos. | Can climb certain painted walls (look out for the white and orange symbols). |
Orange Chocobo | North Corel, Costa del Sol | Thankfully, you can use these Chocobo after receiving a rental key from completing the main story quests in the city and don’t need to catch them. | N/A |
Green Chocobo | Gongaga | Complete the main quest arc of this region to gain access. | Can grind on tree branches and perform high jumps on large mushrooms. |
Teal Chocobo (Aponi) | Cosmo Canyon | Push the mine cart manually and hide behind it whenever a Chocobo starts looking in your direction. It’s like capturing Belle in Junon, minus triggering switches. | Can glide, though you need to use glider ranges and large fans. |
Blue Chocobo (Selena) | Nibel | Requires tossing bait to lure her. Cacti block her approach, so wait for them to deflate before having her move between the rows. | Can shoot high up into the air if there’s water below her (only marginally so on dry land) and glide. |
