Grand Theft Auto 6 Won’t be “Wildly Different” from GTA 5, Says Former Rockstar Technical Director

Rockstar North’s Grand Theft Auto 6 is still way from release, but the reveal trailer, having recently crossed 200 million views, continues to prompt discussion. That includes the views of former Rockstar Games developers, including Obbe Vermeij, who worked as a technical director for nearly 14 years.

He hasn’t been involved with recent titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 or 6 (nor does he possess inside information on the latter), but Vermeij worked on Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto 4. During an interview with SanInPlay on YouTube, when asked about his thoughts on Grand Theft Auto 6’s trailer, he admitted that it “looks pretty amazing.”

However, he doesn’t think the title “is going to be wildly different from GTA 5. I think maybe people might be a little disappointed.” He still feels it will be “the best game out there” and that the Miami vibe “suits GTA very well.”

Vermeij also noted how it’s more challenging to make the same leap in tech today compared to older console generations. “The technology is moving much slower…like the difference between the PS1 and PS2 was enormous, and PS4 and PS5 is not that big.

“You don’t really have that technology jump to make things different and better. So yeah, I think GTA 6 will not be wildly different from GTA 5.” When asked if the lack of significant differences could be the reason for disappointment among some fans, he replied, “I don’t know, maybe they pulled it off. Maybe it’s amazing, but I think some people might…their expectations might bea little too high.

“Because you can never have that jump. The jump from GTA 2 to GTA 3 was big, and from San Andreas to GTA 4 was very big. I don’t think we can ever see a jump like that again.”

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches in Fall 2025 for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 (with Rockstar to make announcements on the PC version “in due time”). Stay tuned for updates in the meantime.
