While Marvel Rivals has been incredibly popular for NetEase Games, it looks like the company wants to further expand the competitive shooter’s player base. According to PlayStationSize, a database entry for a PS4 version of Marvel Rivals has been spotted on Sony’s PlayStation Store backend.

While neither NetEase nor PlayStation have confirmed a PS4 release of the title yet, it is worth noting that the minimum hardware requirements for the PC version of the title do indicate that the last-gen console could feasibly run Marvel Rivals. However, the performance and visual fidelity levels of the game would likely take a notable hit in the process.

Since Marvel Rivals is also available on Xbox Series X/S, a PS4 release also likely means that a version for Xbox One might also be on the way. However, as is the case with any rumour, it is worth taking this news with a grain of salt.

According to PlayStationSize, the PS4 version of Marvel Rivals is likely coming alongside the release of Season 4 of the game. Since Season 3 was released back in July, with a mid-season update coming along at the end of the month, Season 4 is likely slated for release either in late September or early October. However, NetEase is yet to announce the game’s fourth season.

Marvel Rivals Season 3, dubbed The Abyss Awakens, brought with it a host of new content for the game, including a new map – Klyntar: Celestial Husk – as well as new gameplay options like new Team-Ups, as well as a host of new cosmetics through a Battle Pass. Season 3’s rewards were themed around the Symbiote and Phoenix, with several cosmetics revolving around these themes.

The mid-season update, Season 3.5, brought with it a brand new playable character – the shotgun wielding, day-walking vampire Blade. Along with this, the update brought a host of other changes, including switched up Team-Ups, and even some behind-the-scenes changes to improve the game’s performance on PC.

Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen has also previously spoken about how the studio has the option to create its own original characters for the game. While he didn’t go into too many details about whether NetEase Games already has plans for original characters, he did mention that “Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.”

Chen has also confirmed that there is a conversation to be had between the developers and the game’s player base about how the matchmaking in Marvel Rivals works. Responding to a question about whether the shooter uses skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) or engagement-oriented matchmaking (EOMM), Chen said that more details would be revealed soon.

He has also spoken about the NetEase Games’ approach to balancing Marvel Rivals, and how it doesn’t just take the competitive players’ feedback into account. Rather, the studio does comprehensive analysis of the rate at which the various playable characters are picked, and makes adjustments to the game accordingly.

Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play game and is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
