As Insomniac Games gets ready for the September 15th release of Marvel’s Wolverine, the company has revealed that it is also prepared for inevitable criticism about the game. In an interview with The Gamer, director Mike Daly said that the team is “pretty used” to backlash following a game’s release, noting that it “comes with the territory”.
Calling it a “good problem to have”, Daly said that this kind of backlash only happens when a studio manages to garner a passionate fan base. Insomniac last saw this happening with its Marvel’s Spider-Man series, and Daly said that despite the team making a “great game that a lot of people love”, some will still end up finding “stuff to complain about”.
“And I rest easy about this, knowing that our goal for the game wasn’t necessarily to accomplish these things that people complain about. Our goal really was to focus completely on making the best game for the character”
Ultimately, Daly is quite confident about the quality of Marvel’s Wolverine, stating that Insomniac’s goal had been to develop “the best game for the character”. He also went on to note that Marvel’s Wolverine is “completely focused on this character”.
Marvel’s Wolverine is coming exclusively to PS5. In line with its upcoming release date, the title went gold just last week, which means that primary development had ended and the team was now working on post-launch support. The studio has said that the physical release of Marvel’s Wolverine will include a disc that has a fully playable version of the game. However, project director Jess Reiner-Reed still recommends players download the day-one patch.
“Marvel’s Wolverine will come out in digital and physical [versions], and the game will be fully playable on the disc when you purchase it.” That said, there will be a day-one patch, as is always the case for games nowadays, and you’re encouraged to download it.
“We want people or encourage people to download that day-one patch because we are right now working on – or we’re continuing over the next few months before release – to work on polish and some bug fixing.”
Daly had previously spoken about why Insomniac Games had announced Marvel’s Wolverine so early – all the way back in 2021. He noted that, since it was bound to be an incredibly popular title with a lot of eyes on it, it would have been difficult for the studio to keep it a secret.
“We announced Wolverine very early because we knew it would be very difficult to keep a lid on it. We wanted to be able to cast the crew knowing that. Insomniac does take on the very difficult challenge of working on multiple games at once, and we’ve tried to stagger our releases so that the team can help out where they’re needed the most while allowing the other projects to proceed efficiently, which is one aspect of it.”
