Celebrating the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom has released a brand-new trailer for the game, which you can check out below. The trailer clocks in at two and a half minutes in length, and starts off by highlighting the personality of protagonist Miyamoto Musashi in the style of classic samurai films, complete with black-and-white color grading and artifacts like film grain.
Things quickly take a turn, however, when Musashi is ambushed by Genma and, after a series of strange events, ends up with the Oni Gauntlet. The trailer then gives us glimpses at other scenes from throughout the story of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, introducing many of its characters and boss fights in the process. Many of the encounters we had seen in the game’s demo also make an appearance in the trailer, complete with newer and more demonic forms.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is out now on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The title has a demo available on all platforms, and while it only included a single boss encounter at first, an update for it was released last week that added a bit more content, giving players a look at some of the variety of puzzle and combat encounters that players will get to take on.
The title takes place in Edo-era Kyoto, where Malice has caused an uptick in Genma attacks. Around the same time, Musashi is just a young samurai who has been traveling the land in his quest to improve his swordsmanship. Getting caught up in the Genma invasion causes Musashi to change his main goals to also try to bring peace back to Kyoto. Interestingly, the depiction of Musashi in the game is based on how he was played by legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, who has previously played the character in classic films.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first entry in the series since 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The franchise was originally known for how it blended the classic fixed camera angles of the original Resident Evil games with hack-and-slash gameplay that had players take on demons during classical Japan.
In terms of gameplay, Way of the Sword brings in many refinements over its predecessors, bringing the Onimusha franchise as a whole up to modern standards. As the game’s name might imply, swordplay is an important aspect of gameplay, and Way of the Sword gives players plenty of tools to hack-and-slash their way through hordes of enemies while also taking on larger threats, like gigantic and powerful Genmas. Players will also have access to a host of Oni Armaments that can be used to deal extra damage and make fights more manageable. And Capcom has confirmed that players are also able to pet dogs they come across in their travels across Kyoto and its surrounding areas.
