As bizarre as it seems, CD Projekt RED’s support for Cyberpunk 2077 continues nearly six years later. It certainly doesn’t hurt the developer’s bottom line, especially when it leads to a new peak concurrent player record on Steam. But why does it keep going back to Night City?
According to associate game director Paweł Sasko in an official blog post, Update 2.5 was created to “make Night City richer, more coherent, and more believable, for our players.”
However, he adds, “That is ultimately why we are updating Cyberpunk 2077 again. This world keeps giving us reasons to return to it. Edgerunners 2 adds another perspective, 2.5 brings that perspective into the game, and at the same time gives players more ways to make Night City their own.” It makes sense, especially considering the first season of Edgerunners and how it brought in a whole new wave of players keen to make their mark.
“For me, that is what a shared universe should feel like. Different stories, different people, different media, but one city that remembers all of them. And I hope players enjoy returning to it.”
In a way, it also makes up for Cyberpunk 2077’s scrapped expansion plans. As well-received as Phantom Liberty was, with 15 million copies sold, the development team moved on to Project Orion, aka Cyberpunk 2, which began pre-production in May 2025. It’s one reason why CDPR works with Virtuos on subsequent updates, including 2.5. So while they won’t offer the same volume of content as a proper expansion, Night City, for better and for worse, continues to grow.
