It’s hard to believe any game could take away from the fact that Grand Theft Auto 6 requires 212 GB of free space to pre-load, but Bethesda did just that with The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. Unfortunately, the official title reveal and aggressive hinting at Hammerfell as the new location were undone after the team added that it needed “some time” before it could share more.
Fortunately, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reiterated what he claimed last July: That the sequel is “still more than two years away.” Of course, the caveat is “more than.” The optimist will likely wait until 2028, but it could slip past that into 2029 or even 2030. Look no further than Starfield and its delays.
And while it’s indeed been 8+ years since its announcement, Schreier says, “I think a lot of people forget that The Elder Scrolls 6 was only announced in 2018 (along with Starfield) to soften the blow of Fallout 76 – ‘Don’t worry, even though we’re making a multiplayer game we’ve got single-player stuff coming too!'”
Sure enough, creative director Todd Howard’s very words at the time were that it’s “better to say we’re making it. It makes life a little bit easier for us.”
“We’re going to E3 and showing a new Fallout game which is very different than we usually do, and then we’re going to show you an Elder Scrolls game that is very different than we would usually do, and if we leave it just at that, our fans are like, ‘… – Are you still going to do the things I love?’” So, for all intents and purposes, the announcements were to reassure fans.
Howard said in December 2025 that development was “progressing really well,” though he wished it went “a bit faster.” While discussing Starfield’s latest update (remember that?), he answered a question about The Elder Scrolls 6 with “Just pretend we didn’t announce it. Doesn’t exist. No one’s heard a word.” You can decide for yourself whether that was in good humor.
Either way, stay tuned for more details and updates on Sentinel. You never know; Xbox could very well be saving a reveal for next year’s showcase (though the year after that may be more realistic at this point).
