With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation bringing an end to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy once it comes out on April 7th, Square Enix executive and director of the original Final Fantasy 7, Yoshinori Kitase, has spoken about the company’s future plans. In an interview with IGN, Kitase said that the company is more likely to work on entirely new projects rather than focus on remakes of older JRPGs.
However, he also noted that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy has also managed to include brand-new elements that weren’t present in the original title. Taking that into account, Kitase believes that there could be a chance that Square Enix looks at investing in a remake, but new projects seem to be the main way forward for the company.
“I think that mainly, we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games, but at the same time, for example, this time with the [Final Fantasy 7] remake, there was me and other creators who worked on the original game, which we had really strong feelings towards,” he said. “And we really wanted to create something new related to the old game to allow new users to play and to know the appeal of this game as much as the old users who play the old game. So, there might be different cases like this one where the company is willing to invest in remaking old projects and other kinds of games, like it happened this time.”
It is worth noting that, until relatively recently, a Final Fantasy 9 remake was reportedly in development. Earlier this year, however, reports have indicated that work on the project has stalled, and as of March 2026, it was “still on ice”. Other reports have indicated that it was “very far along” before work stalled. With Square Enix itself being quiet on the matter, it might be a while before the project is picked up again.
Interestingly, Kitase also spoke about the potential for future movies based on Square Enix’s properties. While he didn’t really offer any concrete details, he acknowledged that it would be nice to have adaptations of Final Fantasy games so that their stories could be brought to an even wider audience beyond gamers.
“Given the fact that we created this game, the remake of Final Fantasy 7, which explored the world of Final Fantasy 7 way more than the original version, I think that it would be nice to have in the future games or TV series inspired by the story of Final Fantasy. And I don’t see why that should not be a possibility in the future.”
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
