While the jury is still out on the success of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (estimated to have sold 2.5 million copies as of last September), the franchise as a whole has seen strong player numbers. Kojima Productions announced 28 million players since the first game debuted seven years ago, adding that it’s been as long as its deuteragonist, B.B., has been alive (or at least introduced to players).
The figure includes sales of the original game and its Director’s Cut, as well as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, across all consoles and PC. Of course, the caveat is that it also includes players who accessed it through PlayStation Plus and Game Pass, through which the first game is available. We’ll probably never know the official figures for either game, but for now, KojiPro is seemingly content with those who were along for the ride.
A new game hasn’t been confirmed, but Death Stranding has other properties in the works, including an anime series (Isolations) and film (Mosquito). A live-action project is also in production, though a release window remains to be announced. Kojima Productions is working on two new titles: tactical espionage thriller Physint and horror game OD, both published by Xbox. Neither has a release window, so stay tuned for updates, but the latter could arrive sooner than the former.
