One defining feature of Bioware’s games through the years is the ability to romance various characters, which motivates players to spend more time with them, unlock their respective quests and even form stronger bonds. Bioware’s Anthem won’t be going down the same path at launch but that’s not to say that it won’t have romances later.

Bioware general manager Casey Hudson spoke to VentureBeat following news of Anthem not having romances. He clarified that because the game is more of an action title, it would have a different approach to its story. “Of course we do want relationships. It’s just more in an action genre of storytelling.”

That being said, because the world will be constantly changing and receiving updates for years to come, seeing romances added to the game isn’t impossible. Of course, that boils down to whether players “really like a character” and “want to spend more time with them, want a relationship with them”.

Garrus from Mass Effect was used as an example – following positive feedback to his character, the Turian would become a romance option in Mass Effect 2. Time will tell, as per usual, so if someone catches your fancy when Anthem releases on February 22nd 2019, let Bioware know.
