Codenamed "Payback," the sequel has reportedly been in development since The Witch Queen, though "heavily in the background."

As Bungie released Destiny 2: Into the Light and new gameplay for The Final Shape, a curious rumor emerged about Destiny 3. Codenamed “Payback,” it comes from a Reddit user who leaked details about Prismatic subclasses before their official announcement. In a new post, they’ve clarified a few things about Payback, specifically that it is its own game and not a Destiny 2 revamp.

Destiny 3 is Destiny 3. Not a big DLC. Not a revamp of Destiny 2. Destiny 3, as far as my most recent info goes, is a new game in the franchise. I thought that would be obvious.” While still in contact with their sources (previously noted to be “a couple of former Bungie employees”), they learned that Payback has been in the works “at least since” The Witch Queen, but “heavily in the background.” Destiny 2 and Marathon still took up the lion’s share of the development resources.

As for the players’ ability to use any ability, they heard about it “late Summer of last year.” They also clarified in a comment under their previous rumor about Payback’s story that “I’ve never explicitly stated that it is confirmed to still be happening. This is just my most up-to-date info.”

Take things with a grain of salt, as usual. Plans could always change, and predicting the future of Destiny – and Bungie as a whole – is challenging, especially if The Final Shape under-performs.

In the meantime, The Final Shape launches on June 4th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC. Head here for more details about how Transcendence and the new Exotic class items work.
