Much has been made about the popularity of Bungie’s Destiny series. Through the series’ ups and downs, following the split with Activision and the upcoming release of Shadowkeep, it’s interesting to note just how successful the games have been. The NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella shared some figures on Twitter, including that Destiny is the second best-selling FPS franchise in US dollar sales since the first game’s launch in September 2014.
Since that period, it’s also ranked as the seventh best-selling franchise overall in terms of tracked sales. While there are several things to keep in mind – like digital sales for content like expansions, Season Passes and microtransactions – that’s still fairly impressive. It’s perhaps unsurprising to hear that Call of Duty occupies the top best-selling FPS franchise spot for the US.
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is out today for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, coinciding with the release of Destiny 2: New Light. The game is currently offline for maintenance with the next major update out by 10 AM PT. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep launches tomorrow. Since its debut in Sept '14, Destiny is the #2 best-selling FPS franchise in U.S. dollar sales, trailing only Call of Duty.
