Techland’s Dying Light 2 is one of the many titles that faced a sudden delay in January. Originally slated to release in Spring, it’s release window is now unknown. In the meantime, the development team is polishing the experience and making improvements over the first game. One such example is the grappling hook.

The grappling hook was present in the first game but functioned more like Batman’s instant pull to a higher vantage point. Dying Light 2′s grappling hook, by comparison, will be more physics-based, “like a Tarzan or Spider-Man thing.” This is according to senior game designer Bartosz Kulon when interviewed by VG247.

“It’s more physics-based. Like a Tarzan or Spider-Man thing. It won’t be abused because you have to have something above you to swing from.” Another key improvement is ledge detection which is “more precise.” “It was our first attempt, and I made a lot of mistakes doing that. In Dying Light 2 it’s way better optimized, more precise, and actually a bit more complicated, but it helps us in different ways we couldn’t achieve in the first game.”

Fans can also expect an updated physics engine to ensure more realistic parkour. So if you’re character doesn’t feel as bouncy in the sequel, that’s why. “When I played a lot of Dying Light 1, I felt that the bounciness of the character was something that wasn’t that realistic. I spent 6,000 hours in Dying Light, so I see a lot of things that normal people don’t see,” said Kulon.

Dying Light 2 is currently in development for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. It’s also being planned for next generation consoles. A release next year on PS5 and Xbox Series X wouldn’t be all that strange then. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
