Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush and lead producer Bill LaCoste have revealed how well the multiplayer Fallout title has been doing in a recent interview with Insider Gaming. While the main subject of conversation was about bringing crossplatform multiplayer to the title, they also revealed that Fallout 76 has been seeing a rise in player counts, with the game currently getting around 23 million.

While such a growing player base is a good thing for Fallout 76, it is still worth noting that the game’s player base is fragmented across the platforms it is available for; PC players play amongst themselves, as do PlayStation players and Xbox players. This led to the question about bringing crossplay to the game.

“People ask us that all the time,” said LaCoste. “And the thing for us, it has been more of a technical challenge for us to be able to do that. It’s not that we don’t think about it, we think about it often.”

“But, overall, no real plans right now to introduce crossplay, but certainly, we get asked to consider it very often, so we do. Maybe in the future.”

Fallout 76 has been getting a steady stream of content updates. More recently, the game got a major content drop in the form of its Gone Fission update. Among a host of other content, Gone Fission brought in fishing as a gameplay mechanic to Fallout 76. Since the release of the update, players have been able to make use of fishing rods with bait to catch fish, which can then be used as crafting materials in other systems.

Rush had previously spoken about bringing crossplay to Fallout 76 back when Season 20: Glow of the Ghoul was released for Fallout 76. At the time, he also spoke about the success of Amazon’s adaptation of the games bringing in more players to the Fallout franchise.

“The game continues to be a success,” said Rush. “We definitely saw a lot of success last year with the release of the show and the show kind of casting a bit of a spotlight on all the Fallout IP. So, there were people hopping into Fallout 3, 4, 76. 76 is still thriving, it’s still growing. We have more ideas than we could possibly ever do and have no plans to stop. We’re going to continue supporting this game, continue supporting our players and telling the story. There’s never been a better time to adventure with your friends in the wasteland.”

When it comes to bringing crossplay to Fallout 76, Rush admitted that there might be some technical limitations holding the developers back. “We’ve had discussions about crossplay in the past,” explained Rush. “There’s a lot of technical limitations with that. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I wouldn’t be waiting around for it, either.”

Fallout 76 was released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One back in 2018. The title had quite a trouble launched. You can check out more details about that from a former developer that worked on the game.
