Far Cry 6 Offers the Biggest Open World in the Series

Ubisoft is also cautious about not abandoning previous generation consoles "in any way." It will "target maximum quality" on all of them.

For all the talk of revolution and overthrowing the rule Anton Castillo, Far Cry 6’s Yara is pretty big. Speaking to VGC in a video call, lead gameplay designer David Grivel revealed that it was “bigger than any map that we’ve ever done before.” Of course, it’s also full of things to do from mini-games to different activities (like fishing and hunting) and missions.

“It’s the largest open world in the Far Cry brand. I don’t know about other games, but what was important for us is to create points of interest across the map. So we have cities, we have boats, we have airports and everything in between. We keep things interesting also because now we start building things such as outposts, which we now call FNS bases, which offer a classic Far Cry experience,” said Grivel. Thankfully, a lot of the different camps and such won’t be copy-pasted throughout the world.

“It’s not like, ‘ah, there are ten camps in the forest and they all look the same’. Some might be about a sawmill, some might be about a port, some might be about something else, and it’s not just a theme on top of it, it also affects how players approach it because say if now the output is more inside of a building, sniper players will have to adapt to this situation.”

Grivel also spoke about supporting previous gen platforms. Far Cry 6 will be running in 4K/60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PS5 but “that doesn’t mean that the previous generation is abandoned in any way. We’re really, really cautious about that, so we’ll show more detail and more info very soon. But yeah, we’ll care about all the platforms, both old gen, new gen and even PC, Stadia, Luna and all of that.” The development team isn’t anticipating any issues with previous gen console versions and aims to “target maximum quality on all of these platforms.”

Far Cry 6 is slated to release on October 7th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC. Along with a massive world, it also features the largest number of weapons in the series yet (and they can be upgraded after crafting). Gear will also offer different perks, allowing players to augment their play-style in different ways. For more details, check out the gameplay reveal here and protagonist Dani Rojas’s story here.
