Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Guide – How to Use Synergies, and All Synergy Abilities and Skills

One of the big new mechanics in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is Synergies. Though introduced in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, the sequel expands on them significantly with Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities. You gain new Synergies by purchasing Folios from vending machines and bookstores and spending SP to unlock them.

Of course, you also need to level up, increase the Party Level and more to get them all. To use Synergy Skills, press R1 and a corresponding face button. Synergy Abilities require using specific skills and magic to build Synergy (presented as small blue bars next to the character’s portrait in combat).

Each time you use a Synergy Ability, its cost will increase for the duration of that fight. Synergy doesn’t carry over between battles. Here are all the different Synergy Skills and Abilities in the game and what they do.

Cloud

Synergy Skills

Ranged Blade	Barret, Red XIII	When performed with Barret, it becomes Bullet Batter, dealing physical damage. With Red XIII, it turns into Howling Smash and deals magic damage.
Melee Blade	Tifa, Aerith, Cait Sith, Yuffie	When performed with Tifa or Caith Sith, the skill becomes Power Cleave and causes physical damage. Use it with Aerith or Yuffie, and it turns into Spell Blade for magical damage.
Counterfire	Any character	Perform a counter-attack after defending against a ranged attack (including spells).
Voidshatter	Sephiroth	Magic attack that’s only available during the prologue.

Tifa

Leaping Strikes	Cloud, Red XIII, Barret, Aerith, Yuffie, Cait Sith	A physical attack that launches Tifa into the air. When used with Red XIII or Cloud, it becomes Soaring Flurry. Using it with Barret, Aerith, Yuffie or Cait Sith turns it into Heavenly Ascent, which starts with an uppercut.
Bodyguard	Red XIII, Barret	Causes your partner to block damage for Tifa.
Slip and Slide	Any character	Tifa dodges backwards and follows up with a counter-attack. Dodging an attack right before it lands increases the counter-attack’s damage.
