Revealing details about the development of the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, series producer Yoshinori Kitase has revealed that the next title will not be exclusive to Sony’s next PlayStation. In an interview with 4Gamer, Kitase said that: “No, you can rest assured about the next one.”

The response came after a question about whether the third game in the trilogy will follow its predecessors’ trends. For context, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was originally exclusive to PS4, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was exclusive to PS5 at launch. These trends would lead some to believe that the third game would be exclusive to PS6.

Kitase also likely means this to be in the context of how much time the development of the third game would take. He has mentioned in the same interview that development on the third title has already been underway, having been kicked off right after the PS5 release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth last year, “So we’ve been developing it for about nine months already”.

For its part, Square Enix has stated that, while it wants to adopt a multiplatform release strategy for its titles moving forward, it was still “satisfied” with the sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Kitase did mention back in December, however, that he does not believe that a game can be exclusive to a single platform considering the rising costs of development.

Incidentally, Square Enix had previously described the sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth as being below expectations, stating that initial sales during the game’s launch quarter “were not as strong as expected.”

Square Enix had expressed an interest in shifting to multiplatform releases back in September, citing the rising costs of game development, as well as the sales of its exclusive releases, which included Final Fantasy 16 at the time, having not met expectations.

In another interview with Famicom, Kitase had also mentioned that the story for the third game has been completed, and that development of the game is moving on with “no delay”. He also mentioned that he was “very satisfied” with the story that would wrap up the trilogy.
