It is a remake of the original Front Mission, which first released for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1995.
The free Mercenaries update for Front Mission 1st: Remake is slated for release in early 2024.
A free demo is available on Steam, with two campaign missions, three difficulty options, Modern and Classic modes, and progress transfer.
A very straightforward remake misses some opportunities, but delivers a fun enough outing for genre and series fans nonetheless.
