Helldivers 2 Developers Want to Fix Core Performance Issues Before Adding FSR/DLSS

Players have been facing performance issues since earlier this year, and Arrowhead Game Studios is focused on fixing them first.

Helldivers 2 players facing performance issues isn’t exactly a new thing, but some of the most-requested features for the game have been support for AMD’s FSR and Nvidia’s DLSS tech. Using this tech could help players with underpowered hardware also play Helldivers 2. However, Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has said that there are more fundamental performance issues that have to be fixed before FSR and DLSS can be added to the game.

Responding to a question on the game’s official Discord server (as caught by GamesRadar), Jorjani said that the studio often has conversations about adding FSR and DLSS to the game. Priority for the studio, however, is to first fix underlying issues causing performance problems in the game. “It’s on the wishlist, there are other more fundamental problems that impact performance that we will focus on before DLSS/FSR but it’s being discussed,” he wrote.

Since its release on PS5 and PC last year, Helldivers 2 has seen an immense level of success. The player counts started especially increasing after the release of the Heart of Democracy update back in May. At the time, the PC version of the game had crossed 129,000 concurrent players, with the update that involved players fighting for the survival of Super Earth being a big enough moment to bring back several players along with introducing new ones to the co-op shooter.

Back in May, chief creative officer Johann Pilestedt had also confirmed that around 2.5 million players were playing Helldivers 2 every week. Player counts for the game will also undoubtedly start climbing higher when the title comes to Xbox Series X/S in August. Announced earlier this month, Helldivers 2 will be priced at $39.99 for the standard edition, and $59.99 for the Super Citizen Edition on Xbox.

The studio has also confirmed that there are currently “no plans to bring it to Game Pass”. Community manager Katherine Baskin has also confirmed that cross-progression won’t be available at launch. This means that, if you’ve been playing all this time on PC and want to move over to the Xbox Series X/S version, you’ll have to start over from scratch. Despite this, however, cross-platform multiplayer between PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will be available.

When it comes to supporting Helldivers 2 going forward, Baskin had previously noted that there are plans at the studio for the next few years of the title. However, she also noted that these plans are “subject to change” depending on circumstances.

Jorjani himself has also spoken about offering long-term support for Helldivers 2, and even going as far as saying that a sequel to the game is still quite some time away. “Honestly I’m very bought into the vision that Micke, Felix, Niklas and Marre (our game directors) and Johan have for the game,” said Jorjani, responding to a question about a potential sequel. “It’s great to be part of the ride. We honestly are focusing on the here and now. HD3 is hopefully many years away.”
