Just Cause, Mad Max Studio is Hiring For an “Unannounced AAA Project”

The listing is for a Senior Technical Designer that will work with the studio for a year on its proprietary in-house Apex Engine.

Months after having shut down its Liverpool studio, Avalanche Studios seems to have kicked off development of a brand new open-world game. The studio – known for the Just Cause franchise – has updated its jobs page with a new listing for a Senior Technical Designer. Interestingly, the role is for a fixed term, and is only expected to last until February 28th, 2027.

The listing describes the role as playing “a vital role in the development of an unannounced AAA project.” It will involve being a generalist around the studio for tech design, providing support to the gameplay team, and coordinating teams across various disciplines. The listing also confirms that the new game is being developed with the studio’s in-house Apex Engine and its visual scripting editor. To that end, experience with similar visual scripting languages is also required.

The role will be situated in Avalanche Studios’ Stockholm office in Södermalm, which the studio has noted served as the inspiration behind many of the things in its games, including the “lush vegetation of Just Cause and theHunter: Call of the Wild” and “corroded metal straight out of Mad Max.”

The last titles released by a studio under the larger Avalanche Studios Group was 2022’s Call of the Wild: The Angler and 2023’s Ravenbound. Avalanche Studios itself last released Rage 2 back in 2019, working with publisher Bethesda Softworks. Following the title’s release, the studio then made the decision to focus on developing its own new IP and self-publishing its games.

The Liverpool office of Avalanche Studios was opened up back in June 2020, before being shut down in September 2025. In its announcement, the company cited “current challenges to our business and the industry,” and said that it had “thoroughly reviewed” its best options.

“This review has led us to the difficult conclusion that we must make changes to our staging and locations,” said the studio in a statement on its official website. “As a result, we are proposing to close our Liverpool studios, and to initiate a collective consultation process, as required by UK law.” Studios in Malmö and Stockholm will see workforce reductions and restructuring to “address our games’ needs.”

While things had largely been quiet with regard to what Avalanche Studios may have been working on at its AAA offices, there have been plenty of rumors discussing possibilities. One such rumor from back in 2022 indicated that the studio might have begun work on a sequel to 2015’s Mad Max. The rumor largely started thanks to a post by Wendy W Fok posting a picture of how she was scanned at the studio for photogrammetry, and tagged the social media account for the Mad Max game.

Avalanche Studios itself has made no official announcement about what its next title might be. At the time, the studio was working with Xbox Game Studios on a title dubbed Contraband. Unfortunately, the project would be cancelled in August 2025. Most recently, Ravenbound was released on PC. For more details on the game, check out our review, where we gave it a score of 5 out of 10.
