NetEase Games has come under fire for its recent closed alpha release of multiplayer superhero title Marvel Rivals. Members of the game’s community spotted that the contract that players have to sign in order to get access to it includes a non-disparagement clause.

The way in which this non-disparagement clause is worded indicates that those playing Marvel Rivals would not be allowed to criticise the game in any way whatsoever, including making funny or satirical videos about it.

“Making disaparaging or satirical comments about any game-related material, such as game features, characters, or music,” reads the non-disparagement clause, listing the things players are not allowed to do. “Engaging in malicious comparisons with competitors or belittling the gameplay or differences of ‘Marvel Rivals‘ or providing subjective negative reviews of the game.”

In response to players spotting this, NetEase Games has released a statement, apologising for the wording of the non-disparagement clause. According to its statement, the studio is now working on revising these terms, and will be sending the changes to closed alpha players.

“We are aware that there are inappropriate and misleading terms in the commitment regarding sharing non-disparagement content,” reads the studio’s statement. “We sincerely apology for the miscommunication and unpleasant experiences!”

“We are now working on revise the miscommunication terms from our commitment,” it continues. “The progress will be shared with every creator in a timely manner. “Marvel Rivals always welcome all the suggestions.”

Marvel Rivals kicked off its closed alpha earlier this month. As the game became available for download, players had already begun datamining its files looking for hints about future content coming to the game. The datamine revealed several playabale characters that would be coming to the game, as well as a few stages.
