With the open beta for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls slated to kick off on July 24th, everyone expected Arc System Works to unveil the first Year 1 DLC characters. After all, there’s a special panel ongoing at San Diego Comic-Con, but instead, we get something even more endearing – the opening movie, animated in the style of early 2000s anime.
Sanzigen, known for animating Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers, is responsible for the magic with the theme “Stronger as One” sung by SHOW-YA’s Keiko Terada and NEMOPHILA’s mayu. Kanata Okajima has provided the lyrics while MEG of MEGMETAL, who’s worked with ONE OK ROCK and BABYMETAL, is the composer.
While the story revolves around the Marvel population of superbeings fighting each other to face the Promoter and ultimately, the Champion, the theme does make you think. Maybe completing all their stories in Episode Mode will yield a final arc, where everyone teams up to lay the smackdown on the Champion or some bigger threat? One can certainly dream.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on August 6th for PS5 and PC. In the meantime, the open beta will be available until July 26th and include 15 fighters across all teams. You can learn about three of them – Blade, Black Panther and Danger – here, or check out our feature on how the game works.
