Following the release of the latest first-party PS5-exclusive game, Marvel’s Wolverine, earlier this month, a new report by Christopher Dring of The Game Business has indicated that it has already claimed the third-place slot in the best-selling PS5 games list in the UK. In a social media post, Dring has noted that, while its sales are still lagging behind two major releases from earlier this year – Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light – the title is trending ahead of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced in the UK.
Offering further context, Dring has said that Marvel’s Wolverine’s sales are 60 percent lower than those of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and only marginally lower than those of last year’s Ghost of Yōtei. Comparing it to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, however, Insomniac’s latest release is doing quite a bit better, with more than 3 times the sales.
Another report by Alinea Analytics from last week has indicated that the title has already sold nearly 2 million copies in its first three days alone. Out of this, one million sales seemingly came from just digital pre-orders before launch, and physical copies of Marvel’s Wolverine have made up around 22.9 percent of overall sales. In total, the title has already generated around $130 million in revenue.
When it comes to another first-party PS5-exclusive release from this year – Saros – Marvel’s Wolverine has been doing better, since Housemarque’s roguelite shooter has managed to sell 510,000 copies so far. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, on the other hand, has managed 740,000 sales across PC and PS5.
It should come as no surprise that Marvel’s Wolverine is doing quite well amongst fans of other Marvel games, with 82 percent of Marvel’s Spider-Man players, 70 percent of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 players, and 67 percent of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales players having contributed to the latest game’s sales. Bringing in other superhero games, the report has noted that there is some crossover with fans of Batman: Arkham Knight and Marvel Rivals as well, with 45 percent and 43 percent having bought the game, respectively.
The commercial performance of Marvel’s Wolverine has been quite interesting to watch, especially considering the divided critical reception it garnered. While many reviews, ours included, were quite positive about the title, others have criticized it for a variety of things, including the frequent presence of scent trails that guide the players through linear levels to their objectives. Insomniac Games, for its part, has taken the feedback quite seriously, and has already released an update that makes the scent trails “less intense”.
The studio has gone on to say that it is also evaluating “ways to further improve Senses”, including the potential ability to disable them altogether. Earlier this month, Insomniac Games had said that it is “actively engaged” with the community and is “gathering feedback to further refine the player experience.”
