Like its predecessor, Octopath Traveler 2 will feature a cast of eight playable protagonists, and though their stories will intersect a lot more than what fans of the first game will remember, each of them will also have their own individual stories, and in the lead-up to the game’s launch, Square Enix has been shining the spotlight on those characters. Last month, we got a trailer that introduced two of them with Partitio the Merchant and Osvald the Scholar, and we’ve now got another trailer that details the stories and gameplay abilities of two more. Check it out below.
First, there’s Throné, a member of the Blacksnakes, which is a thieves guild run by her parents (who seem like pretty shady people) and controls the city she lives in from the shadows. When it comes to gameplay abilities, Throné can steal items from NPCs, or even ambush foes and knock them unconscious without having to enter combat. When she does enter combat, at nighttime, she can use the Blessing of Darkness ability to buff up all allies in her party. Meanwhile, her Latent Power, Leave No Trace, allows her to act twice in a single turn.
Then there’s Temenos the Cleric, an Inquisitor who finds himself in a conflict involving forces heretic mobilizing against the church. One of Temenos’ abilities allows him to guide NPCs and lead them around as members of his party, while he can also coerce characters to extract valuable information if he manages to “Break” them in battle. In combat, Temenos can use the Moonlight Judgment ability at nighttime to enfeeble all enemies, while activating his Latent Power, Judgment, lets him lower foes’ Shield Points regardless of how he attacks them.
Meanwhile, the new trailer also reveals details on Octopath Traveler 2’s expanded Jobs system and the guilds of its new fantasy setting. As you progress further in the game, you’ll be able to unlock Secondary Jobs for each character in addition to their primary Jobs, enabling you to equip weapons from both Jobs and giving you access to an expanded list of skills to use in combat. Various guilds can also be found throughout the game’s world, where players can join to attain unique licenses by fulfilling requests, which in turn will give you access to Secondary Jobs.
Octopath Traveler 2 launches on February 24, 2023 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
