The NPD Group has released data for software and hardware sales in the United States for January 2022 (via GamesBeat), and there are some interesting developments on both fronts. On the software front, unsurprisingly, Pokemon Legends: Arceus has topped the charts, just as it did in the UK and in Japan. Recently, Nintendo announced that the game sold over 6.5 million units in its first week. Meanwhile, fellow Pokemon games, the recently released Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl come in at No. 11 in the NPD charts.

Rainbow Six Extraction is the only other new release on the charts, coming in at No. 9. Both Monster Hunter Rise and God of War are also back in the charts at No. 3 and No. 3 respectively, and both saw significant jumps thanks to their PC releases. For context, in December, Monster Hunter Rise was ranked 94 in the charts, while God of War was at No. 146.

Another PlayStation game that’s continuing to enjoy impressive sales is Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game consistently ranks high in sales charts in the US and in other regions, and it takes sixth place in the January NPD charts. In fact, it is the third best-selling Sony-published game to date in terms of dollar sales, behind only Marvel’s Spider-Man and the aforementioned God of War (2018). As of July last year, Miles Morales had sold over 6.5 million units worldwide- it should be interesting to see where its lifetime sales stand right now.

On the hardware front, the PS5 was the leading console in the US for the month of January, best-selling in terms of both dollar sales and unit sales. Xbox Series X/S ranked second on both fronts- which means the Switch had a relatively more low-key month, ranking third in both dollar and unit sales.
